Heritage Tour of Sri Lanka Itinerary in detail

Day 1: Anuradhpura

Where, it all began. Historically and chronologically considered the country’s first kingdom,Anuradhapura can trace its roots all the way back to the 4th century BC; and, at the time, was a one of the most developed cities in the world.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the ancient city was made the capital of Lanka by King Pandukabhaya who started the great irrigation works on which it depended on (and still does) for sustenance.

The Heritage Tour of Sri lanka will cover eight different sites of special historic and religious significance in the city of Anuradhapura. We begin at the Sri Maha Bodhiya, an ancient Bo tree which, according to legend, grew from a sapling off the very same tree in whose shade the Buddha was said to have achieved Enlightenment. Next stop: Ruvanveli Seya, a mammoth stupa built by King Dutugemunu that stands tall and proud among a sea of similar constructions scattered throughout the ancient city. The sheer size and majesty of it will take your breath away.

The first day will be devoted to exploring the length and breadth of this great kingdom. On your way to the various sites, feast your eyes on the massive artificial tankson either side of the road that are testament to the unprecedented irrigational and technological expertise of ancient Sri Lankans.

Please find below a list of sites we will cover:Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya , Ruwanweliseya, Thuparamaya,Lovamahapaya,Abhayagiriya Dagaba, Jetavanaramaya,Mirisawetiya and Lankaramaya

Spend the night in Anuradhapura, and prepare to head over to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second great kingdom, next morning.

Day 2: Polonnaruwa

From Anuradhpura, we make our way to the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa.

Like Anuradhpura, Polannaruwa is an ancient city home to numerous ruins and relics of a bygone era that boast a land and people of much splendour, culture and religious devotion. It was one of the most powerful and prosperous kingdoms of ancient Sri Lanka that stood strong for nearly fifteen centuries.

One of the key stops here will be the Galwiharaya, a famous and picturesque outdoors temple that houses giant rock-carvings of the Buddha in seated, standing and reclining positions.

As part of the tour, you will explore many such sites in Polonnaruwa that are of great cultural value. Be sure to note the subtle differences in craftsmanship and depictions of religious figures between Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa during your visit.

Among the sites we will be visiting are: Galwiharaya, Vatadage, Thuparamaya, Sathmahal Prasada  and Nishanka Latha Madapa

Overnight stay will be at the hotel in Polonnaruwa.

Day 3: Dambulla/Habarana

Travel to Dambulla on the third day. Come lunch time, you can check into the hotel, and either enjoy the buffet there or head out for lunch someplace else, after which you can relax at the hotel premises and even ride an elephant while you're at it.

In the evening, you and the family can visit the ancient Dambulla Rock Temple renowned for its mural paintings and Buddha statues and also happens to be one of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in the country.

Night stay at Dambulla.

Day 4: Dambulla/Habarana

After a quick breakfast at the hotel, you can spend the morning climbing the world famous Sigiriya rock fortress – yet another UNESCO heritage site, famous for its ancient frescoes as well as its extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and plumbing dating back to the 5th century AD. Take in the splendour of a bygone majesty.

You will be escorted back to the hotel in Dambulla where you are expected to spend the night.

Day 5: Kandy

After breakfast at the hotel, we check out and head straight to Kandy, the hill capital of Sri Lanka.

Before making your way to Kandy City from Pinnawala, you will visit the Giragama Tea Plantation and then check out the the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, home to over 4000 species of exotic flora from various parts of the world and a true feast for the senses. The lush greenery provides a great backdrop for all your family photos and selfies.

And then, off to Kandy we go. Sitting on a plateau 500 metres above sea level, Kandy is, in essence, the heart and soul of the island. As the island nation’s last kingdom and the final stronghold against the advancing British Empire, Kandy boasts a rich cultural heritage that spans centuries.

Nowhere is this heritage more apparent than at the Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the foremost sacred place of worship for Buddhists the world over. A tooth relic of the Buddha himself is said to lie here and is visited by millions of Buddhists every year.

Check in to the hotel, and wind down for the rest of the day.

Day 6: Kandy

You will be taken on a city tour after breakfast – an excursion that will include a stroll around the world famous Kandy Lake. If you want to buy original, authentic Sri Lankan handicrafts and souvenirs, Kandy is the place to be. You can shop in and around the city premises to your heart’s content.

The Dalada Maligawa is not the only place of cultural significance in the hill capitol. In their efforts to protect and preserve Buddhism, the Kandyan kings of old were responsible for the construction of a multitude of temples in and around the city. Among these is the famous Embekke Dewalaya, with hundreds of wooden columns with countless carvings depicting the teachings of Buddhism. Other places of note include the Lankathilaka Viharaya and Gadaladeniya, centuries-old temples, venerated to this day.

After lunch, take a boat ride on the lake to give your evening that extra bit of serenity. The day will end with a magnificent traditional dance show at 5pm.

Day 7: Departure

Quick breakfast at the hotel, and we set off straight to the airport.
