Golf in Sri Lanka

This prestigious ball game was introduced to Sri Lanka during British rule. Today the country boasts of four 18 hole golf courses: namely in Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya and Trincomalee

The Colombo Course The Royal Colombo Golf Club

The Royal Colombo Golf Club established 130 years ago spreads across 96 acres of land in the heart of Sri Lanka’s capital. Over the years it has been developed to an 18-hole par 71 course.

In Colombo you could play golf any time of the year as long as rain and thunder showers do not strike. The course is open daily at 6.30 am and remains open until 6.30 pm. Amenities include;

  • Pub
  • Coffee Shop
  • Fitness Center
  • Pro Shop- A store which serves all golf purposes
  • Locker Room

The use of a Caddy is compulsory. Golf carts and buggies are available for hire.

The Kandy Course/ Victoria Golf and Country Resort

Victoria Golf Course is regarded as one of the best courses in the subcontinent. It is set on a picturesque location overlooking the Victoria Dam. This is an 18 hole, Donald Steel designed, Par 73 golf course.

Like in Colombo at the Victoria Golf, you can play golf all year around, as long as thunder and rain showers do not disturb the game. The course opens daily at 7.00 am and remains open until 5.30 pm.

The Nuwara Eliya Course / Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

This Golf Club, designed in the late 1880’s, is beautifully kept, covering a 99 acre land. It is an 18 hole, 69 par golf course.

Nuwara Eliya is known to be one of the coldest places in the country due to its high elevation. During the months of June and July, golf is not played due to wet weather conditions. The course opens daily at 8.00 am and remains open until 7.00 pm, but is closed during public holidays.

Trincomalee Course / Eagles’ Golf Links

A more recent addition to golf in Sri Lanka, Eagles’ Golf Links is
an 18 hole, 72 par golf course. The course overlooks the Clappenberg Bay and Malay Cove in Trincomlaee. The course opens daily at 7.00 am and remains open until 6.00 pm, but is closed during public holidays.
